My school career began with a Head Start
program in Chattaroy, WV. After that I
began Kindergarten at Chattaroy Grade
School (which no longer exists). I went
to that school until my 3rd grade year
was complete. After that I transfered to
West Williamson Elementary School because
I was starting to slip grade-wise at
Chattaroy. The reason was that I could
never "fit in" (this is a problem I have
had to fight to overcome) and I let it
affect my whole mental/emotional state.
Overcoming self-esteem issues is a very
difficult thing.
Ok, enough about my problems. I then began
junior high at Williamson Jr High School.
The pattern mentioned above (not fitting in,
doing slightly below average, etc) continued.
It was the worst 3 years of my life (7th, 8th,
and 9th grades were all in the Jr High
building, although technically 9th grade is
high school level). My high school years
_really_ began my 10th grade year when I
started in the Williamson High School
building. It was better than Jr High, but
not a whole lot. I graduated on schedule <G>
in 1991, and finally got away from the hell
that was public school. Afterwards, I matured
more than I ever had. I had room to grow as
a person. I was no longer confined by the
school system or my shallow, superficial,
cliq-oriented peers (I am speaking in general
terms, not all were like this). I am still
learning to be a more mature, responsible
person to this day BTW. };-> I WAS FREE!!
"Free at last, free at last, thank God
almighty, we are free at last.", to quote
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
See personal info for my 6 month endeavors
in North Carolina right after I graduated
(and my work history overall).
After we moved back from NC, I started Southern
West Virginia Community and Technical College
(the "and Technical" part was added right
before I got my degree from there) in January 1992.
I majored in Computer Information Systems, and
I actually enjoyed my 2 1/2 years there. I fit in
better there than anywhere else before. Most of
the people I associated with were older than my
peers and myself. They behaved more maturely.
They weren't flakes like teens and young adults
these days seem to be (again, generally speaking).
I graduated and got my Associate Degree in
Computer Information Systems in May of 1994.
After a two year term with RadioShack, I started
at Marshall University. I began as a Computer
Science (CSD) major, but changed to Management
Information Systems (MIS) after my first year.
Marshall decided to terminate the CSD program
(for political reasons...much controversy there).
They were going to rush the last of us to get
into the CSD program through an accelerated
program. I didn't want to be rushed through
and have the quality of my education compromised,
so that's why I changed my major to MIS. I'm
glad I did.
Update 1:
Spring 1999:
It is now my senior year. I love the MIS
program! I am learning Database Design
(including instruction in SQL and MS Access),
Systems Analysis and Design, business
applications programming fundamentals
(specifically in Visual Basic). It's great!
Only one more semester to go!
Update 2:
December 1999:
Well folks, I have finally graduated! I have
added a link to my Online Resume at the top
of this page. Check it out.
